During your therapy our team will specifically address deficits in your posture and provide specific suggestions on how to correct your work / office and sleeping postures. Some general postural ergonomic guidelines are listed below.
When standing:
When standing:
- keep your knees slightly bent
- If standing for longer periods, rest one foot on a low step (stationary stool)
- Adjust the chair such that hips, knees and elbows are at about a 90-degree angle
- Feet should be flat on the floor or an appropriate footrest
- Support the curves of the spine with the backrest of the chair and avoid slouching in the chair
Below are some general guidelines on maintaining proper body mechanics.
When carrying / lifting items:
When carrying / lifting items:
- Plan your actions (make sure you can handle the weight and ask help if necessary).
- Use properly fitting shoes that are low heeled, and get a firm footing prior to lifting.
- Bend your knees and hips to get close to the load. Use your leg muscles, not our back to lift.
- Keep the object close to your body.
- Keep your back as upright as possible and hold your stomach muscles (core muscles) tight.
- Use wheeled carts to carry heavier, bulkier objects.
- Wear clothing that allows your body to move.
- Avoid stretching out with your arms
- Reach only as high as is comfortable for you, use a ladder or step to approach the object before grabbing it.
- Store commonly used items in easily accessible places.
- Turn with your feet not your back. Do not keep your feet fixed when turning.
- Position commonly used items in front of you.
