Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia induced widespread musculoskeletal pain can be characterized as a dull ache, occurring bilaterally, both below and above the waist. The pain is accompanied by fatigue despite sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disrupted by pain resulting in sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. Furthermore, fibromyalgia could be accompanied by an inability to focus, depression, pain and cramping in the lower abdomen.
Fibromyalgia symptoms can either arise after a significant physiological or psychological stressor or over time without a particular triggering event. The disorder cannot be cured, but a variety of interventions can help control the symptoms. This multimodality intervention requires a close collaboration between clinicians, chiropractors and physiotherapists to ensure appropriate diagnosis and management of the patient (Schneider et al. 2009).
Lifestyle changes that can alleviate symptoms include stress reduction, good sleeping habits, regular exercise, eating healthy and avoiding caffeine.
